No end in sight to Calais blockades
In a twofold story involving people from ferry companies together with up to 3,000 potential asylum seekers, the problems in Calais continue. Calais has been blockaded so many times recently, one group of French Trade Unionists have declared they could enter “like a hot knife through butter”.
Illegal migrants have set fire to piles of tyres – though no-one knows where they got them from – which has caused delays and cancellations to journeys both in and out of the area.
Mr Vercoutre – in charge of the demonstrations, has said there will be a long summer of “strike action” and has stated, “we want to make the French, British and Belgian governments understand that if a solution isn’t found to save our 600 jobs there will be a lot of disruption”.
MyFerryLink workers are protesting about the sale of their ferries to rival firm DFDS Seaways, and job cuts. A tricolour French flag has ben used in protests
Riot police are working in Calais to try and deal with the threat. Arrests have been made.
Meanwhile thousands of “migrants” are sleeping rough in Calais wishing to get to Britain to claim asylum or to disappear into the black economy. Clashes with police have occurred on their way to Dover.
All at The Saturn Herald convey their hopes that these problems are ameliorated without harm to the person or violence in these difficult times.
