World number one, ruthless  Novak Djokovic  from Serbia beat nerves in the second set and  came through 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 6-0 in three hours and 39 minutes. The Serb  beat British number one three times in a Melbourne final to achieve his eighth Grand Slam title.

Murray, 27, despite  winning  two of the eight Grand Slam finals he has played in, he lost all four in Australia. The Scot, currently fourth in world rankings, did not have the answer for the Serb’s  excellent returns and stable defence.

Djokovic, who had made a blazing start in the first set leading 4-1 within 20 minutes before his first unforced error,  did a wobble to lose the second set after appearing to struggle with an ankle problem.

In the third set with scores level 1-1 Djokovic upped his game into “top gear” by winning 75% of those points, and left Murray screaming. Murray won just 33% of his points on his second serve in the second set but went on to secure the tie-break, but in the third and fourth set his form dropped to  winning 27% of his first serve.
