Cunning research and price comparisons has resulted in some unexpected surprises in store for devoted Poundland shoppers.
Though we all know we can find a multitude of very welcome pound-priced goods including bulbs, stationery, shampoos, cleaning equipment and food, there are certain goods – maybe in different quantities, which work out to be cheaper bought in other shopping outlets. Of course, this may pose a problem for devoted shoppers:- the time factor – in order to get total value for the weekly shop…
Last week the store announced sales had exceeded £1bn a year. The first store opened in 1990 (in Burton-on-Trent) – co-founded by market trader entrepreneur Steve Smith who sold his interest in the business in 2002 for £50m. Many affluent families love the store which has units in very prestigious areas of the UK including Cambridge and Bath. The only slightly negative part of the pricing of goods in Poundland is that they must all retail at one pound. Here are some comparisons for items which can be bought cheaper elsewhere:- (at the time of this report, these are accurate)
Poundland – 2 litres of milk – £1, Asda – 2.27 litres of milk – 89p, Poundland – 250g Kellogs Cornflakes – £1, Asda – 153g Kellogs Cornflakes – 98p, Poundland – 105g packet of Minstrels – £1, Asda – 153g packet of Minstrels – 98p. Before comparing any more costs, The Saturn Herald and staff welcomes and likes Poundland and of course, all customers can do their own price comparisons – we are simply advising of a few done by special teams of researchers.
On a very positive note, 24 McVitie’s Jaffa Cakes cost £1 at Poundland, and £2.29 at Tesco, and the popular Fray Bentos steak and kidney tinned pie costs £2.20 at Sainsbury’s compared with £1 at Poundland. Almost all goods’ costs can in fact be favourably compared to the prices at other outlets.
Poundland’s spokesperson confirms price surveys are conducted every two weeks against the supermarkets and over 1,000 of Poundland’s products are 40% cheaper than in other outlets. The spokesperson added that they have kept the same single £1 price for 25 years. Its rival – 99p stores is in talks to prevent 99p stores being taken over by Poundland and faces an investigation into the deal by the Competition and Markets Authority.
