Roger Federer first man to win 8 times Wimbledon
Third seed Swiss, Roger Federer became the first man to win Wimbledon eight times and extend his record to 19 Grand Slam titles with victory over Coratia’s seventh seed Marin Cilic, 6-3, 6-1, 6-4. Cilic struggled with a blister on his left foot and broke down in tears during second set.
Thirty-five-year-old Federer, finished the match in one hour and 41 minutes to claim his first Wimbledon title since 2012.
Federer said “ Holding the trophy now, after not dropping a set in the tournament, it’d magical really. I can’t believe it yet. It’s too much. It’s disbelief I can achieve such heights. I was not sure I would ever be here in another final after last year. But I always believed and kept on believing and dreaming I could get back. Here I am today with the eighth. It’s fantastic feeling, if you keep believing you can go far in your life”.
Roger Federer will receive @2.2m an increase of £200, 000 on 2016.
According to All England Club 0rganisers, a larger total prize pot og £31.6m up £3.5m from last year’s amount. The finalist will receive £11m, Semi-finalist £550k, Quarter-finalist £275k, Fifth-round £147k, Third-round £90k, Second-round £57k, First-round £35k.
Top seeds Jamie Murray and Martina Hingis beat defending champions Heather Watson and Henri Kontinen 6-4, 6-4 to win the Wimbledon mixed doubles final.
They crucially broke Watson and Finn Kontinen in the seventh game of the match and soon after took the first set and repeated again in the second set in the seventh game to lead 4-3, then held serve in the 10th game to secure the title.
