Rosie World’s oldest Humboldt Penguin celebrates 31st Birthday
Native to South America, Rosie has lived at Sewerby Hall in East Yorkshire since 1990 when she was brought from a bird park in Surrey.
Staff at the Bridlington Zoo said “ the grand old lady” had been the “centre of attention”, with special watermelon and fish cake made for her party.
Humboldts whose scientific name is Spheniscus humboldti, in the wild are threatened species by overfishing of their preferred prey, and climate change, as they live in rocky coasts and islands, sometimes burrowing holes or using caves for shelter.
Rosie lives with fellow penguins, Dion, Pingu, and Penny who can travel through water at speeds up to 25mph.
