The second wave of coronavirus in Beijing, with a level two alert, in 27 neighbourhoods which are classed as medium risk, and one near the market classed as high risk, as no one will be allowed to leave as spike continues.

Millions of people in Beijing are living under renewed restrictions as pandemic virus spike continues as the city reported 31 new cases on Wednesday bringing the total to 137 in the past week.

People in medium or high-risk areas cannot leave the city. People in low-risk areas can leave, but need to test negative first, with only limited testing available until July in three testing stations.

More than 1, 255 flights have been cancelled to and from the city and railway services have been reduced until at least 9 July.

Schools and colleges are suspended, sports teams cannot play and swimming pools and gyms are closed although roads are open and companies and factories can still work.

Before the current spike, the Chinese capital had gone 57 days without any COVID-19 cases. The epicentre of the outbreak believed to have started in the massive Xintiandi Food Market that supplies 80 per cent of the city’s meat and vegetables.

Local media said the virus was discovered on chopping boards used for imported Salmon at the Xintiandi food market.
