Afghanistan won by 1 wicket (with 3 balls remaining)
Afghanistan were freewheeling, until magnificent 28 year old, Samiullah Shenwari’s 96 took them to brink of victory, then Hamid Hassan and Shapoor Zadran saw them home to their first World Cup win ever with one wicket and three balls to spare.
Afghanistan was reduced to 85 for 2 in the 19th over to 97 for 7 in the 24th over after some clever blowing by Richie Berrington and Josh Davey with five wickets for 12 runs between them.
Shenwari, however, managed to farm most of the strike in a 35-run partnership with Dawlat Zadran and 60-run stand with Hamid Hassan and threatened to get his side home with a maiden century. He lofted three sixes off Majid Haq in the 47th over to get to 96 runs before he was caught in the deep attempting his fourth.
Afghanistan sit above Sri Lanka and England, with a better run-rate. They should be proud
