Snapchat gets gaming platform
Snapchat is following the mobile gaming lead of WeChat and Facebook Messenger by adding games to Snapchat as it tries to puts failures of 2018 behind it.
Snap is hoping to tap the £54bn ($70bn) mobile gaming market, when Apple, Google, Tencent and Microsoft are all making new bids for developers’ and players attentions.
The multiplayer platform within its app, will host its own games as well as those from third-party developers, such as Zynga.
Investors have concerns over competition from Facebook-owned photo app Instagram, who has announced plans to focus more on privacy and ephemeral messaging which are really Snap’s main selling points.
WeChat, the messaging app has attracted hundreds of millions of players to its mini games, a strategy which Facebook has tried to emulate with its instant games for Messenger.
One initiative called Snap Games, will feature “made-for-Snapchat games”. One game is Bitmoji Party where BItmojis can compete across four mini-games.
