Aiden Markram sped past 50, then Faf du Plessis with Temba Bavuma had 97-run stand  as South Africa wrestled control of the first test from Sri Lanka. South Africa lost three wickets for 20 runs in the early third session. Dhanajaya de Silva is confirmed to have sustained a grade two tear in his left thigh and will play no further part in the series.
