Stan Wawrinka wins US Open, stuns Novak Djokovic in four sets
Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka stunned world number one Novak Djokovic with stimulating display to win his first US Open and third Grand Slam title.
Wawrinka 31, seeded third, won 6-7 (1-7) 6-4 7-5 6-3 to add the US title to his 2014 Australia Open Title and his French Open wins last year. He hit 46 winners, compared 30 form Novak Djokovic, displaying invigorating shot-making, as his winners ripped through challenges with his backhand finding successful responses where others failed.
Although Serba’s Djokovic made a strong start, he could not sustain it , as he struggled and stumbled physically, as the final entered a fourth hour in New York.
US Open champion Stan Wawrinka said, “ I don’t know what’s happening right now. I played almost four hours. First I must say about Novak. You’re a great champion, a great person, because of you I’m where I am today. I’d like to congratulate you on everything you have done. This is amazing. I came here without the goal of winning it but stepped on the court trying to win the match. I played lot of tennis. My goal is to give everything I have to be the best I can. I never had a goal to win a Grand Slam but I am trying as best I can. Match after match I was playing better. One last thing, today has been a big battle on the court but there is a bigger thing so I just want to remember what happened 15 years ago.”
