Strong tsunami triggered earthquake kills 384
A strong tsunami triggered an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 and waves up to 10feet high swept through Palu on Sulawesi Island.
Indonesia’s disaster agency said at least 384 people had been killed, but the number is expected to rise and 540 injured.
Last month, a series of deadly earthquakes struck the Indonesian island of Lombok on 5 August killing more than 460.
Palu is home to more than 300, 000 people and rescue operations are hampered by disrupted communications.
According to the US Geological Survey “, the earthquake hit just off central Sulawesi at a depth of 10km (6.2miles) just before 18:00 (11:00GMT). Indonesia lies on the ring of fire and prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions that circles virtually the entire Pacific Rim.
Thousands of homes have collapsed along with hospitals, hotels and shopping centres. The main road to Palu has been blocked due to a landslide and a key bridge collapsed.
