Super-typoon hit China, 1.1m people evacuated, 600 flights cancelled
A super-typhoon pounded the Chinese coast south of Shanghai on Saturday with strong winds and heavy rainfall, submerging roads, felling trees and forcing the evacuation of 1.1 million people, 28m764 ships ordered back to port, 100 trains and 600 flights cancelled the cities of Hangzhou, Ningbo, Wenzhou and Taizhou.
Typhoon Chan-hom smashed the South Chinese of Shanghai ashore with winds of up to 100 miles per hour (160 km) per hour in Zhoushan, Zhejiang province. The downpour recorded more than 100 millimeters (4 inches) of rain since late Friday 10th July 2015, roughly about a month’s average in less than 24 hours, China Central Television and the Xinhua News Agency reported. However No casualties have been reported by Saturday evening.
Some 1.1 million people were evacuated from coastal areas of Zhejiang and more than 46,000 in neighboring Jiangsu province ahead of the storm, Xinhua said.
The national weather service said earlier the super typhoon might be the strongest to strike China since 1949.
Heavy downpour was reported in some areas, including the village of Lai’ao, which recorded more than 400 millimeters (16 inches) of rain, according to Xinhua.
