Review of Boom – A story of The Sonics (band) at The 26th Raindance Film Festival

The Sonics are amazing…first, they invaded the music world, then secondly they receded into obscurity, then thirdly they came back bigger than ever nearly 40 years later.  Writer/Director/Producer Jordan Albertsen (of Scandinavian descent) took it upon himself to make a big story of The Sonics and wow! What a story. Jordan’s love of the band kept him going while he not only tried to raise finance but also tried to permeate the story of The Sonics which included loads of research going back many years.

Footage included outtakes of the band members getting into fights at high school, first concerts where their performances changed their lives and that of others.  Their concerts used to leave people remarking that their performances were a “fucking rock baptism”.

Over the years, people just could not forget them despite the fact each band member left the group and went on to do other jobs. 40 years on they were brought out of retirement and some of them re-grouped and went on to do popularly received performances when they went on an extensive tour.

Certain people joined the tour and took footage of the band performing. Mike Evans was closely involved. It brought him and his father closer together as his dad had been a firm fan years earlier. He followed the band around Europe and still hopes many many people will see the film they made.

The project of making this film covers ten years…Jordan Albertsen called the full cinema of viewers a “test audience” and said “you’ve gotta wave the white flag…and get on with it”.  Jordan is taking the film to 4 more festivals.  I tried to advise him and his friends on future marketing with some success.  Jordan is working on another film..”Bastards of Young” and another one called “The Sonics”.  Watch this space.
