The UK had voted to Leave the EU, Cameron resigns
This morning David Cameron made a speech in Downing Street voicing his decision to resign as Prime Minister and leave office probably in October of this year. Narrowly winning the vote to leave the UK, Brexit campaigners have now got what they wanted. This has already lead to German Chancellor Angela Merkel announcing “great regret” at the situation. Conservative Party Chairman Andrew Feldman will also step down when the PM leaves office and in Scotland, they are already preparing legislations for a second independence referendum to take place.
The leave votes mainly came from the more rural North of England as well as the rural South and Wales but Scotland voted to remain and so the story continues.
Boris Johnson hails “glorious opportunity” of Brexit. The UK had voted to leave the European Union, shocking the world , as 58 per cent of the North East backed leaving the EU. The working class voters had their say while high university-educated population and London has voted heavily to Remain in the EU. Yorkshire and the Humber gave one of the highest Eurosceptic results in the country, with 57.7 per cent of people backing leave. Northern Ireland had polled more Europhilic than any other region in the UK with the results in its Remain vote of 55.7 per cent was the third strongest in the country. Wales was one of the biggest shocks in the results as its people backed Leave, although deprived areas in West Wales benefit from receiving high levels of EU aid, with Wales receiving nearly £2.5bn in structural funds between 2014 and 2020. The pound has fallen as the future of the UK’s economy is plunged into uncertainty. Greenland showed how to leave Europe as far back as 1984.
The final result
Remain 48.1%
Leave 51.9%
There have been hints and allegations that now other EU members may vote to leave, including Sweden, for example, who have also rejected the Euro in the past.
