Thrissur Pooram the largest temple festival
Thrissur Pooram , an annual Hindu temple festival held at the Thekkinkadu Maidanam, adjacent to Vadakkumnatha temple at Thrissur, kerala, India.
Pooram day is when the moon rises with the Pooram star in the Malayalam calendar month of Medam.
Initially created by Raja Rama Varma, also known as Sakthan Thampuran, the Maharaja of Cochin (1790-1805). The largest temple festival in Kerala at Arattupuza. In 1798, Sakthan Thampuran unified 10 temples around Vadakkunnathan temple and organised the celebration of Thrissure Pooram as a mass festival and paid obeisance to Lord Vadakkunnahtan ( Lord Siva).
Display of the golden elephant caparison ( Nettipattam), elephant accountrements (Chamayam), ornamental fan made of peacock feathers (Aalavattom), Royal fan (Venchamarom), bells and decorative umbrellas prepared new by Thriuvambady and Paramekkavu Devawsoms.
The pooram displays a collection of 50 elephants decorated wityh nettipattam, inlcuidng melam exchange of colourful and crafted umbrellas at the top of the elephants called Kudamatton.
Poorams are secular in nature as all communities actively participate and make their prominent roles in each and every part of the festival, like pandal works created by the Muslim community, the materials for the umbrellas are offered by the churches and their members.
