Violent storm triggers motorway Genoa bridge collapse killing 30 as 35 vehicles plunged off the bridge
Seven people were pulled alive from the wreckage of a collapsed bridge in the northern Italian city of Genoa killing 30 and injuring 16 with further 10 missing.
Thirty-five cars and three heavy vehicles plunged a significant distance into a river and an industrial area when a large section of the Morandi Bridge collapsed at about 11:30am during a sudden violent storm.
Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte arrived in Genoa said “this is terrible accident and the cause of the collapse is still being investigated.” Restructuring work on the bridge which was constructed in the 1960s was carried out in 2016. The collapse could have been caused by a structural weakness.
