A team of 25, 000 contact tracers are tracking down close contacts of people with coronavirus and will be told to self-isolate under a new scheme in England and Scotland.

Tracers will text, email, or call people who test positive with coronavirus and ask who they have had contact with. Any of these contacts deemed at risk of infection will be told to isolate for 14 days, even if they are not sick.

The aim of England’s NHS Test and Trace system is to lift national lockdown restrictions and move towards more localised targeted measures.

The team’s first job will be to start by contacting the 2013 people who tested positive for the virus on Wednesday.

Anyone who develops symptoms of coronavirus – a persistent cough, fever, or a sudden loss of taste or sense of smell has to isolate for seven days and the rest of their household for 14 days. This is in keeping with rules already in place. From now on everyone with symptoms should ask for a test online or phone to arrange a test by calling 119. If the test comes back negative everyone in the household can go back to normal.

Close contacts are people you would spend 15 minutes or more with at a distance of less than

2 m. The contact must have taken place between two days before and up to seven days after symptoms appeared.

At the moment coronavirus is being suppressed by lockdown restrictions that are applied across the whole of society.

The US has passed 100, 000 deaths in the coronavirus outbreak in less than four months with a1.69 million confirmed infections about 30 per cent of the worldwide total. The first infection in the US was reported in Washington state on 21 January. Globally there have been over 5.8million people recorded as infected and 357, 738 deaths since the virus emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan late last year. In New York alone 21, 000 people have died. Nearly 39 million Americans are out of work during the pandemic, as the US is pressing ahead state by state with reopening the coronavirus frozen economy.

The world’s largest theme park, Walt Disney World in Florida, is planning to open on 11 July. Four Las Vegas casinos owned by MGM Resorts are also scheduled to reopen on 4 July.

Brazil’s death toll reached 25, 598 with over 411, 821 confirmed cases second only to the US.

In South Korea, 2.4 million students returned to school on Wednesday despite a mini-surge in new daily cases.
