Volvo stops making diesel and petrol cars
The Swedish firm Volvo would switch to electric for all models and would not rely on an internal combustion engine by 2019.
Yesterday’s UK car sales of diesels figures showed a 15 per cent drop, following stern warnings about air pollution deaths and costly levies. There was also upward sales surge of electric and hybrid models.
Volvo’s new Chinese owner Geely said it will launch five electric cars by 2021 with the US making four Hybrid models and from new factories in Sweden, China, and Belgium.
This announcement marks the end of the solely combustion engine –powered cars” said Hakan Samuelsson Chief executive of Volvo’s car making division. People are increasingly demanding electrified cars, and we want to respond to our customers current and future needs,” he said. Volvo want to sell one million electric cars by 2025.
Volvo also announced new partnerships with both Nvidia and Autoliv in an attempt to become a major player in the autonomous car industry.
The announcement will turn Polestar into a new separately branded electrified global high performance car company.
