World’s longest hair village
Longji scenic area of Gulin, China, Huangluo village, 82 household of Red Yao ethnics, whose names are associated with red clothing. Their ancient traditions keep tourists entertained, however, the most fascinating thing about it is the women’s obsession with long hair as they are also known as the “ Long Hair Village” across China and have received a Guinness certification for the “world’s longest hair village”. The average hair length of the 12o women is 1.7 meters and the longest locks exceed 2.1 meters!
During summer and autumn, women would go to the river to wash their hair and wear a blue scarf to keep it hidden. They only cut their hair once in their lives, when they turn 16 and wash their hair with rice water which they believe is the secret to sustaining their long hair.
Their motives for maintaining this lifestyle is their belief that long hair brings wealth, longevity and good fortune.
