150 dead, half a million displaced by floods in Sri Lanka
Sri Lankans recovering from their worst floods are bracing themselves for even more rain as emergency teams are still struggling to deliver aid.
Over 150 people have been killed and over half a million displaced in the flooding and mudslides triggered by heavy rains on Friday. Another 115 people are still missing according to officials as military boats and helicopters are helping rescuers.
Their worst floods since 2003 when the south west monsoon destroyed 10, 000 homes and killed 250 people. Kelani river over flooded south western region Ranapura was worst effected area. Over 350, 000 have no electricity. The south western monsoon created havoc. Roads in Wuyangala submerged in water.
Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Centre issued evacuation notices to residents along the Kelani river, which runs through the capital Colombo.
