20 dead as WW2 plane crashes in Alps
Vintage World War Two aircraft Junkers JU-52 crashed in the Piz Segnas mountainside in eastern Switzerland, near the Austrian border, killing 17 passengers and 3 crews who were on a sightseeing flight when it took off on Saturday afternoon at 5 pm.
Operator JU-Air who has suspended all flights until further notice, said it was saddened by the news and it had set up a helpline for relatives. The mid-century plane, was on a flight between Locarno in Souther Switzerland to Dubendorf a Southern Zurich, was found about 8333 feet above sea level.
The cause of the crash is still being investigated. The Ju-Air airline operated three of the vintage planes known as “Auntie Ju”, decommissioned by the Swiss Air Force, and used as part of the sightseeing tours.
