Typhoon Damrey claimed 30 lives and a further 25 are missing, including members of 112 cargo ships that were sunk off the coast of the central province Binh Dinh, according to the Vietnam Management Authority. Despite this , 74 other crew members were rescued.

In the province of Khanh Hoa 14 people lost their lives as houses collapsed and some washed away by floods.

According to provincial disaster agency, 600 houses have been destroyed and nearly 40, 000 others were damaged. Power lines collapsed in many areas, and scores of flights cancelled.

Before emerging into tropical storm, the cyclone unleashed over 12 inches of rain on parts of northern Visayas and southern Luzon in the Philippines earlier this week. Damrey was the strongest storm to hit Vietnam in the last 16 years according to NASA.

According to the World Bank natural disasters have killed more than 13, 000 people and caused more than $6.4 billion in property damages to Vietnam over the past two decades.
