Island of Hokkaido in Northern Japan has been hit by 6.7 magnitude earthquake triggering landslides that destroyed houses, killing 9 and a further 40 missing.

Three million homes have power cut after the power plant was damaged.

The tremor struck 39 miles south-east of the regional capital Sapporo in the early hours of the morning. A non-operational nuclear plant had to switch to its back-up power supply to keep sent fuel cool.
