South Africa won the toss and decided to bowl
England won by 104 runs
Bne stokes made 89 and Jason Roy, Hoe Root and Eoim Morgan all hit half centuries to take England to a massive 311-8.
Although Quinton de Kock’s 69 had South Africa in the run chase at 129-2, he pulled Liam Plunkett to long leg to become first of three wickets to fall for 15 runs and Stoke took two wickets in two balls South Africa’s fate was sealed.
Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer ensured England got their World Cup campaign off to a winning start against South Africa. Playing his fourth international took 3-37 bowling at lighting speed in excess of 90 mph and hit Hashim Alma’s helmet to force him to temporarily to retire. Stoke took a one handed catch on the boundary to dismiss Andile Phehlukwayo, as South Africa was dismissed for 207 in 39.5 overs.
England travel to Trent Bridge Nottingham to play Pakistan on Monday and South Africa are back at The Oval to take on Bangladesh.
