England won the toss and elected to bowl.
On Day one swashbuckling Rishabh Pant, displaying 360°stroke play scored 146 off 111, crashing 19 fours, and four sixes, ably assisted by Ravindra Jadeja who was 83 not out sharing a stand of 222 for the 6th wicket and steered India from an initial collapse of 98-5 to 338-7 at the close of play and tested England’s new test strategy approach to batting “Bazball revolution” trained by coach Brendon McCullum. Pant’s 89-ball century rescued tourists after England’s high-quality attack pacemen exploited most of the morning cloud cover either side of a two-hour break for rain and the movement on offer following captain Ben Stoke’s decision to bowl first after winning the toss. Pant eventually sliced Joe Root’s off-spin to slip.
The final Test in the series was postponed last September with India leading 2-1 after positive cases of Covid-19 among tourists’ backroom staff.
On Day 2 Jadeja who resumed on 83 completed his third Test hundred 104 from 183 balls hitting 13 fours. India was bowled out for 416 in the morning session with Anderson taking 5 five wickets for 60 runs. Broad bowls, the most expensive over in Tests conceding 35 runs, Indian tail wagged as Burmah scored 31 off 16, hitting 4 fours, and 2 sixes.
Jasprit Bumrah bowls Lee (7), Crawley (9), caught second slip, and Pope (10) caught by Syras as England slipped to 84-5 in 27 overs after the loss of Joe Root followed by nightwatchman Jack Leach, in reply to India’s 416.
