Aeromexico flight AM 2431 flying from Guadalupe Victoria International Airport in Durango to Mexico City crashed around 16:00 local time (21:00 GMT) Just moments after take-off, with 99 passengers and four crew surviving the ordeal 97 with minor injuries. Most of the passengers were able to walk away before the plane caught fire.

According to State Governor Jose Aispuro, the plane was hit by a gust of wind, which caused a sudden descent, with the left wing touching the ground and two engines came off.

The pilot is one of the two who are seriously injured as he needed an operation of his spine, and the other was a young girl who sustained burns. One other passenger was hit by lightning.

According to local media, Aeromexico has a good safety record as its last accident was in 1981, when it crashed on landing in northern Chihuahua state and killed 32 people.
