Amazon buys 11, 787 jets amid pandemic
Amid pandemic, Amazon has confirmed the purchase of 11 second-hand used Boeing 787 jets as it continues to expand its worldwide delivery empire. This is the first time Amazon has actually bought planes as all others in its fleet are leased.
Delta Airlines sold seven of the planes, and the other four were sold by Canada’s WestJet as Amazon decided to scoop a few jets as the pandemic prices for passenger jets have fallen.
By the end of 2022, Amazon will have 85 planes carrying cargo across the US and around the world.
Sarah Rhoads, Vice president of Amazon Global Air said “ purchasing our own aircraft is a natural next step toward our goal to continue delivering for customers across the US in the way they expect from Amazon. Having a mix of both leased and owned aircraft in our growing fleet allows us to better manage our operations which in turn helps us to keep pace in meeting our customer promises”.
However, Amazon will continue to rely on third-party carriers to operate the jets.
Back in October, Amazon invested in a fleet of new electric delivery vans made by Rivian.
Jeff Bezos whose company was founded in 2000, sold more than £ 2billion of Amazon stock last week, as his company’s value rocketed past the £ 1 trillion marks, Amazon stock is up 75 per cent after the customers were forced to order much of their goods from home during the pandemic and the US election on Tuesday.
