Baby elephant in Belgium
The baby elephant is taking his first steps in life.
The poaching of elephant and habitat loss has led to a dramatic decline in populations of both Asian and African elephants in recent decades. In 1930 there were about 10 million wild African elephant which has been reduced today to less than 400, 000 and Asian elephants were also dropped from 200, 000 a century ago to a mere 38, 000. Conservationists fear that unless demand dries up for ivory ad people stop moving into prime elephant habitat, the world’s largest land mammal could become just a memory within another hundred years.
