Bacon, Sausages, hot dogs, Salami, corned beef, beef jerky and ham as well as canned meat all are classified are processed meat and does cause cancer according to latest report from WHO.

The World Health Organisation issued a warning that processed meat does cause cancer and red meat is probably carcinogenic. Processed meat which has been modified to extend its shelf life or change the taste and it is achieved by adding more salt, preservative or curing or smoking.

 

Red meat includes beef, lamb and pork has higher levels of proteins that bind to oxygen haemoglobin and myoglobin in blood and muscle. Suspected carcinogenic chemicals can form N-nitroso compounds and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

 

Each 50 grams of processed meat per day –fewer than two slices of bacon increased the risk of cancer by 18 percent.

Each 100grams of red meat per day increased the risk by 17 percent.

WHO estimates suggest 34,000 deaths from cancer every year could be down to consuming processed meat.
