Covent Garden Hotel Project gets go ahead for Star De Niro

Robert de Niro

Top US Actor Robert de Niro has said the mostly positive reaction to his proposed new hotel in London “makes perfect sense”.  He already  owns a hotel in New York.

Some misgivings have been aired about interference with noise to productions such as The Lion King at The Lyceum but generally optimism prevails.

The new 83 room Wellington Hotel joint venture between Oscar winner de Niro and BD Hotels and CapCo is destined to take up most of the block of buildings opposite the Lyceum Theatre.

It will have a restaurant, a spa and a private members’ club based in the block.  It is bordered by Exeter,  Burleigh, Tavistock and Wellington Streets and there are 3 Grade II listed buildings on the site.

The new hotel will be up to 8 storeys in places.  Councillor Robert Davis said “I think this is an amazingly exciting proposal” referring to the “mean streets” of a largely forgotten part of Covent Garden.
