Edakkal Caves is located in the Wayanad district of Kerala( India) at approximately 124 km from the Calicut International Airport and around 10 km from Sulthan Bathery. Taxi and bus services are easily available at an economical rate.

Edakkal Guha( ‘Guha’ is for cave in Malayalam, the regional language of Kerala) as the name suggests is a cave like structure formed by two natural rocks which is believed to be formed by a large fissure in a huge single rock. The name ‘edakkal’ itself is believed to be derived from the meaning ” stone in between”.

A short trekking through the Ambukuthy Mala can take you to your destination. Even jeep service is available as an alternative. Ambukuthy mala (also known as Ambukuthy hills) in itself is a scenic beauty. Local inhabitants often visit the place to relax and refresh themselves.

It is believed to be the earliest centres of human habitation in Wayanad( India). The pictorial inscriptions and rare stone-age carvings date back to 6000 BC.

Many researchers, both local and foreign, visit the place often to study about the various pictorial stone carvings.Edakkal cave was in news in recent years when members of archeological department and professors from kerala and Tamil nadu( Indian states) discovered a fifth Tamil-Brahmi inscriptions among the various stone carvings here. Four Tamil-Brahmi inscriptions, belonging to the third century C.E., had already been discovered earlier in this cave.

The route to the Caves as well is worth a visit as it gives you the pleasure of jungle safari, hill station experience and trekking.

It is open for tourists on all weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the duration of visit limited to two hours.3-star hotels and many homestays are available nearby at an affordable price.

The icing on the cake is that the mesmerising Chembra Peak, the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and the Soochippara waterfalls are all situated at a few kilometers from Edakkal Caves.
