Goldie Hawn launches designer rickshaw in London to save Asian elephants
Academy Award-winning actress Goldie Hawn launched a fleet of Designer colourful Rickshaws that will hit the streets of London to raise money for her charity work to save the endangered Asian elephant. Goldie loves everything about India, and especially captivated by Asian elephants. Seven years ago, she travelled to India to be with wild elephant, which left lasting impression in her heart and mind. She wanted to do more to save these endangered animals.
The designer rickshaws created by Diane von Furstenberg, Mulberry and Carolina Herrera sponsored by Selfridges will offer Londoners rides across the capital to raise funding for Mark Shand’s charity Elephant family.
Goldie said “ Mark put the plight of Asian elephant and save the endangered spices”.
The Asiatic elephant (Elephas maximus) is the only living species of the genus Elephas are the largest lving and animals in Asia. World Wildlife Fund estimates that there may be only 10 Asian elephant populations of more than 1,000 animals in the 13 countries where they are currently found (WCMC and WWF International 2001).
Demand for ivory led to wild Asian elephant being captured and poached. It is estimated that wild Asian population, which numbered in the hundreds of thousands at the turn of the 20th century, is now only 37,000 Asian elephants. Yet thanks to ancient cultural tradition, about 15,000 Asian elephants are cared for and kept in captivity in 11 Asian countries in various Hindu temples.
