Saint George’s Day also called the Feast of Saint George is the feast day of Saint George as celebrating the anniversary of his death  in 303 AD, by various Christian and by the several nations, kingdoms, countries and cities of which Saint George is the patron saint including Bulgaria, England, Georgia, Portugal, Spain (Catalonia and Aragon).

Gallant knight St George and his legendary battle of slaying and taming the fearful dragon  with sword and shield that demanded human sacrifices,

The English  Patron saint has captivated British imaginations since the crusades and the Hundred years’ War.

St George was born is what is present day Turkey, after following his father’s steps, he became a soldier and quickly rose in the ranks of the Roman Army, ending up as a personal guard to Emperor Diocletian. When the emperor ordered the persecution of Christians, St. George refused to follow his orders and participate in this. He was tortured and executed in 303 A.D, in Palestine where he is now buried.

The town of Silene was captured by a dragon. The locals would offer a human sacrifice to the dragon everyday. When St George was visiting the town a princess was chosen to be sacrificed. So he killed the dragon and save the people of Silene. To express gratitude, the locals converted to Christianity. Towards the end of the 18th century when England unified with Scotland on May 1, 1707.

 

 

Saint George’s Day is normally celebrated on 23 April, but Church of England rules denote that no saint’s day should be celebrated between Palm Sujnday and Sunday after Easter.
