Kilauea volcano erupts and spewing Steam and spattering molten lava shooting 150 feet in the air and snaking through the 200 yards wide forest forces evacuations after 5.0 quake. Hawaii County official said steam and lave poured out of the crack in Leilani Estate which is near the town of Pahoa in the Big Island.

“It sounded like a bunch of rocks into a dryer and turn it on as high as you could. You could even smell the sulphur and burning trees and under bush and stuff” according to a Big Island resident.

The U.S. Geological Survey said new ground cracks were reported Thursday afternoon. The Puu Oo crater floor began to collapse on Monday, triggering a series of earthquakes and pushing the magma into new underground chambers.

Puu Oo last erupted in 1983 resulting in lava fountains soaring over 1500 feet high and destroyed several homes which buried dozens of square miles.
