Portraying herself as a “champion of ordinary Americans” is not easy for the super rich Hillary Clinton who is tipped as a possible leader of the USA for the Democrats. Apparently they were “dead broke” as a couple when they left the White House in 2001, but since then the Clintons  have raked in $125m in speaking fees, apparently $25m of it in the past 16 months.

Bill Clinton will continue to give paid speeches, and has said “I got to pay our bills…..I work hard at this.  I spend hours a day just doing research.  People like to hear me speak”.

In May the Clintons were in Morocco – Bill and his daughter Chelsea stayed in a palace of King Mohammed VI and mixed with Oligarchs, businesspeople and billionaires in a setting of great beauty – including palms and pools. There were allegations they were given money by a government owned firm which represses their own people.

Hillary has also earned $5m from her book “Hard Choices”.  The Clintons are amongst the top 1% of earners in the USA, and some years ago in The Sunday Times intelligence report on US presidents, Clinton came top as the most savvy and wise man to ever run the USA.  He currently gets paid more than his wife for talks and speeches – the highest being $500,000 from the EAT Stockholm Food Forum in Sweden.  Most speeches result in payments of $250,000, while his wife earn $235,000 on average for her talks.

Tony Blair is a close friend of the Clinton family and was  paid £364,000 for two half hour speeches made in The Philippines in 2009.  Blair’s rate for his speeches is lower than the Clintons but still commands sizeable figures.
