India won by 317 runs.

England finally succumbed to an inevitable 317-run defeat by India on the fourth day of the second Test in Chennai.

Chasing 482 on a deteriorating pitch, England lost all 10 wickets to spinners as they were bowled out for 164 to leave the four-Test series poised at 1-1/

Captain Joe Root  (33) and Moeen Ali (43)provided prolonged resistance. Debutant Axar Patel claimed 5-60, while off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took 3-53 with match figures of 8-96 to go with a century in India’s second innings.

Earlier, Ashwin plants Ali into the stands for six by sweeping slog to take him 97, followed by full toss which is pushed into the offside for two, Then comes down the track and edges it over the slips and races to the boundary and a century as Chennai crowd goes ballistic.  Ashwin inside edges Stone ball onto his stump ending the innings with a well-played 106 in tricky conditions. Ashwin who was given lives on 28, 56, and 70, made 106 sharing 96 with Virat Kohli who scored 62 to take India to 285 in their second innings and set a notional 483 to win on the pitch often exploding when the ball lands. England’s spinners  Leach and Moeen Ali shared 14 wickets,

Dom Sibley lbw to Azar Patel, Rory Burns edged Ashwin to Gully, and nightwatchman Jack Leach fell the first ball as the tourist Slumped to 53-3 at the close. The Third test is in Ahmedabad on 24 February.
