What on earth do people do who find themselves on the city streets, hunting somewhere to get refuge and forever hungry and traumatised?  They all rely on the good nature of those who are blessed with better lifestyles to patronise them on a fingers on the pulse type of project to help them survive until better times present themselves……

The London Evening Standard has announced a charity campaign to feed the needy in London. An estimated 10M tonnes of food is wasted each year and at present many supermarkets give food to be pulped for animal feed only donating 3 per cent to needy people. Food for London has been launched today and the vans delivering food to hungry people will have “good food for good causes” on their side. There are 2 full time employees and 23 volunteers bringing food and social interaction with more than 500 people in London weekly. In The Standard it announced, “To get the ball rolling, we have put together a £100,000 package backed by £50,000 from The Evening Standard Dispossessed Fund and matched by £50,000 from the Felix Byam Shaw Foundation.” Hopes are the operation to help the hungry will escalate and bring more money and volunteers in.

The Felix Project is founded by Evening Standard Chairman Justin Byam Shaw and his wife Jane in memory of their son Felix.  The vans collect food from 12 suppliers.  These include Costco, Daylesford, Makro, Booker, Sainsburys and Waitrose.  The project has committed to match fund all money raised by the campaign for the Felix Project with up to £750,000.

One does wonder why there are not more projects like this on the go.  All reactions to this comment, please email me at pennynairprice@gmail.com
