New Zealand  took charge of the first test with a record second opening century stand  of 148 in England between Guptil  70 off 115, 8 fours and 1 six, and Latham, 59 off 98, 10 f0urs, and an unbroken 3rd wicket partnership of 155 between Kane Williamson 92 not out off 141, 12 fours, Ross Taylor 47 off 109, 5 fours. The ground offered little swing as the England bowlers were struggling in the last hour, with new ball due in 3 overs. Latham on the back foot attempted to play Moeen around the wicket  to square leg and was LBW, and 3 balls later Guptil snicked Broad for low catch which Gary Ballance obliged.
