The picture shows Susannah Mushatt Jones last year at a nursing home in Brooklyn. Se was born near Mongomery Alabama on July 6 1899 when William McKinley was president and 18 months before Queen Victoria died.  she had ten brothers and sisters and went to an all black girls’ school. She was married and divorced once and had no children. Her love of family and generosity to others were the main reasons her relatives credited her with such a long life.  She was the last USA citizen to die after being born in the 19th Century.

Now Emma Morano from Italy who is now also 116 is the officially world’s known oldest person on record.  Women do tend to live longer than men and some say it is because they remain active longer involved with such things as general housework, laundry cooking and shopping.  The world’s know oldest living man according to Guiness records is Mr Israel Kristal of  Haifa who is  112.
