Dr Donald Highgate working with Bristol and Surrey universities and Director of Research at Superdielectrics Ltd is to develop supercapacitors using the new polymer which was originally used in soft contact lenses which can surprisingly good at holding an electrostatic field.

Dr Highgate is of the opinion that the new polymer could eventually rival or even surpass, lithium-ion batteries as long as they can replicate prototype performance on a large scale.

Supercapacitors are not only good at providing quick bursts of power like starting a car engine or give the train a boost when accelerating but also they are well suited to harvesting energy from vehicles when they brake.

Polymer-based supercapacitors are emerging as a promising technology.
