Prison Officers strike highlights problems in the services.
Part of the reason prison officers have been on strike is because members of the service have been targeted by bombers, according to the Daily Mail. There have been paramilitary attacks on Northern Ireland Officers where members of the RUC get a higher level of security. Loyalist paramilitaries launched pipe bomb attacks on serving and retired staff which made the crisis deepen.
In the UK one of the problems is understaffing. Due to the strike the trial of Thomas Mair murderer of MP Jo Cox was halted yesterday. Other issues involve prisoners receiving drugs delivered by Drones to their windows and understaffing.
Prison Officers were yesterday ordered back to work as up to 10,000 staff joined a protest announcing jails were “in meltdown”.
In some prisons up to 80 per cent of the staff were involved in these disputes. Unsurprisingly it was announced under new rules the strike was unlawful .
The Prison Officers Association said “a continued surge in violence and unprecedented levels of suicide and acts of self harm” include the reasons for the protest, as well as prison escapes namely Pentonville.
Liz Truss, Justice Secretary, criticised the action and tried to continue talks on the subject which were apparently refused. As previously announced, there were no staff willing to transport Thomas Mair from Belmarsh to the Old Bailey and the case was adjourned.
