A raging wild forest fire in the northern Alberta Dilsands city of Fort McMurray, that have already torched 1600 homes and other buildings, prompted evacuation of  80, 000 residents.

Scott Long of Alberta Emergency Management said “ The situation in Fort McMurray is not stable. It is unstable.”

In Rural Municipality of Wood Buffalo, the wind-whipped fire was continuing to claim homes and had destroyed a new school.

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley flew over the affected areas and tweeted pictures of the fire from above ”The view from the air is heartbreaking,” she wrote. She also said “ We saw areas where there was a tremendous amount of smoke, we were up in a helicopter and the plumes of smoke were higher than we were.” She declared a state of emergency to ensure that the federal government pays part of the cots of the wildfire.
