Rain kills 92 in Germany and Belgium
The worst flooding in the states of Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia in western Germany and Belgium killed 92 people with several more missing, after record rainfall which caused major river banks to burst their banks. Maly Dreyer, chief of Germany’s Rhineland-Palatinate state called the flooding “ catastrophic”.
At least 19 people died in the Ahrweiler district of Rhineland-Palatinate, after the Ahr river which flows into the Rhine, burst its banks.
Twenty houses are in danger of collapsing in the district of Schuld bei Adenau in the mountainous Eifel region, where a state of emergency has been declared/
Eight deaths were reported in the district of Euskirchen in North Rhine-Westphalia, where four people died I the Eifel region when their homes were swept away,
The Netherlands has also been badly hit with flooding rivers damaging many houses in the southern province of Limburg.
Two fire fighters died on Wednesday in Northern Rhine-Westphalia, one drowned while the other collapsed following a rescue operation.
