Many of his fans consider him, a living God; his film releases are nothing less than grand festivals replete with fanfare, celebrations and devout fans pouring liters of milk on his huge cut-outs (akin to the Hindu religious ritual known as ‘Abishekam’). The man is RajniKanth and the makers of his next film ‘Kabali’ had released the first look poster last Wednesday and within minutes the poster was trending on Twitter with the hashtag ‘#Kabali’, all over India. The poster depicts Rajnikanth as a grey haired Don in a stylish silver colored suit with the famed PETRONAS towers of Malaysia forming the backdrop.

A typical, huge, Bollywood style film star, some might think of him, but RajniKanth is more than that. During the mid 90’s when Tamil Nadu state was reeling under a never-seen-before political crisis, the entire population of the state was waiting for his entry in to politics and take over the mantle as Chief Minister. A reluctant political aspirant that he was and still continues to be, RajniKanth turned down the notion and instead went on to lend his support to the next best alternative. His, is the real and inspiring story of a bus conductor with humble beginnings who went on to become one of the most popular and powerful film stars in the entire history of the nation.

RajniKanth’s recent films didn’t do exactly well at the box office. His last major hit was the Sci-fi entertainer ‘Enthiran’ released in 2010. His subsequent films- the 3d animation film ‘Kochadaiiyaan’ and the part-period film ‘Linga’, failed to attain the success that would normally be expected from such a huge star with a huge fan following. The clever strategist that he is, Rajnikanth in an astute move signed the young and critically acclaimed film director ‘Ranjith’ who has just two films under his belt’, for his next project. This marks the first time in many years that RajniKanth is collaborating with a relatively young director. Since Ranjith’s last film ‘Madras’, a dark revenge drama about gang violence set in the North Chennai- which itself is notoriously famed for real-life gang violence and crimes, was much well received both critically as well as at the box-office, ‘Kabali’ is also reported to be a gangster-mafia story. According to media reports, the story predominantly takes place in Malaysia. Understandably, the stylish and uber-cool poster has created much excitement in the media and has sent his multitudes of fans in to a dizzy. The shooting for the film began on 17th Sep and fans are waiting with feverish excitement for its completion and subsequent theatrical release.
