Robo Car taken for a test ride in UK

Renault-Nissan has a research centre in Silicon Valley and have “autonomous” cars which are used in real traffic conditions.  A Nissan Leaf which is a heavily modified all-electric car was tested with a journalist present.  It has cameras, sensors and other radar systems, as well as computing power in the trunk.

This car can apparently help itself round traffic with sensors only needing the occasional help from someone in the driving seat.

The car is not perfected and needs work as at the present time it tries to do manoeuvres which humans would do which are not always good.  These cars are technically programmed to be driverless.  The Docklands light railway is also “driverless” though it has personnel to supervise passengers, it is essentially run through a control room.

Sluggish and slightly boring were words used by Leon Poultney to describe the prototypes for driverless cars.  Go out and see for yourself if you can get a test drive one day some day any day anywhere.

Cheers
