Tesla to build world’s largest lithium-ion battery
Tesla will build world’s largest lithium-ion battery in South Australia to store renewable power and prevent blackouts in the power grids.
Elon Musk, Tesla’s founder, secured the contract to build the battery within 100days. He said “ I do see South Australia willing to do a project of this magnitude which the world will look at as an example of being able to do large-scale battery application for the grid that really take a large amount of load”.
Back in January 2017, Tesla, made a similar 80MWh electricity storage system in California, to power at least 2, 500 homes for a day.
Tesla’ Powerpack battery system has a capacity of 100MW.
Jay Weaterill the South Australian premier said: “ After leading the nation in renewable energy, the 100MW/129MWh battery places South Australia at the forefront of the global energy storage technology”.
