India is now home to nearly 3, 000 tigers, a third more than it had four years ago according to the tiger census.  India is home to around 70 per cent of the world’s tiger s and now one of the biggest and most secure habitats of the tiger.

Wayanad a wildlife sanctuary in Kerala. India has more tigers when compared to other tiger reserves and the tiger density is high as well according to a census report.

Wayanad wildlife sanctuary established in 1973, situated adjacent to tiger reserves in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, has the most number of tigers and elephants in an area in the world. The reserve has 120 tigers and its 312 cameras captured 1, 380 images of tigers including 29 cubs.

The sanctuary spread across 344.44 sq km and the tiger population here has swelled 40 per cent in 4 years.

According to one estimate, big casts breed and live in only about 10 per cent of India’s total potential tiger habitat of 300, 000 Sqkm (115, 83- sq miles). Animal density in several forest areas is high and surplus tigers sometimes venture outside for food bringing them into conflict with people who live nearby.
