THE CRYSTALLISATION  OF A REALISATION  by Penny Nair Price

When you study what’s usually a raindrop in really icy weather,

It produces magical snowflakes frilled like a feather.

A sun’s beam through more rain, candy-coloured can console

Because it makes an arc of gorgeous hues that lift up your soul

An incandescent rainbow never fails to drown your blues.

And fills you with happiness right down to your shoes

The beats on the window when it’s warm inside –

The tip tap tapping of tiny raindrops outside

Inside the house in the gloam people feel loving and warm –

Away from the cold naughty rain’s watery storm

While when you’re outside, springs of tiny misty raindrops on your face

Freshen you when your feet trip through puddles and increase their pace

Your skin smarts and prickles in the stinging wetness of the rainy shower

And makes a few minutes seem like a testing hour

Clouds and cold weather cling in the skies together

Sometimes a hint of dark colour tells us more rains on the way

And sometimes in any colour whatever- a misty spray

Your eyelashes drip drop drip along with your fringe and the top of your lip

Birds find gutters to have a quick bath on the rooves

Flipping in their feet and back and wings to speed their feathery moves

Then suddenly out comes the sun in shiny delight

Making us smile at its welcome warmness so bright

The lemon feathery fingers of new spring sunlight

Search into every corner making everything seem warm and bright

We feel the temperature rising to a new high

And a perfect powder blue fills the sky

Step out of the door and feel the warmth caressing your face

Feel your body sun kissed and warmer with every pace

See the blossoms in full bloom and the leaves a luscious green

Dispel the doomy feelings from cold weather  and in your summer clothes be seen

Sunshine makes people feel young and also so free

You can see happy dogs, happy parents and children filled with glee

But as the heat builds up to an oppressive hot

We sometimes think of the rain we thought we had forgot

Rushing inside to take a cold bath or icy shower

The hot weather burns on hour upon hour

Beckoning us to go lazing in the park

Or go and cool off having a drink while it gets dark

Perfumes of the body heat rub off on us and others too

But let’s face it hot weather rarely makes us feel blue

We suddenly discover clothes we half remembered we had

And to put them on however scanty makes us feel so glad

When we put them on together with hats and specs it’s a bit of a pantomime

But it’s how we remember that we are finally in the midst of summertime!
