Potholes frustrate motorists all over the world, who pay their road taxes but could not make local council’s account for eradication of potholes and other local council all around the world should learn from the solution below. To tackle potholes the PWD plans to use citizen participation with the help of modern Information technology.

The Maharashtra PWD department in India has led the way with app which can be used by road users who when they spot a pothole they can be reported with just the click of a picture and beam it to the Public Works Department via the app. The photo will be Geo-tagged  with location and date and will be sent directly to the executive engineers. Once the pothole is filled pictures of the rectification proof will be sent to the complainant and to the war room in the Mantralaya the state secretariat office of PWD.

The app developed by the IT department of the PWD is available in Android platform, free to download and use it next time you see a pothole which can even cause accidents. He even gave a commitment that all potholes on state highways and district highways will be filled before December 15, 2017.

The problem of potholes in Maharashtra became so bad that the Chief Minister of the state Devendra Padnavis decided to have accountability of repairing potholes efficiently in a timely manner. He even forced the PWD Minister Chandrakant Patil who have been facing wrath from the public and politicians alike, to change his ways after saying that potholes did not mean the sky has fallen.

Launched by the Thane Municipal Corporation two years ago, the app had become popular among residents. The formal launch will take place next week. According to PWD  official, “ We want to include other complaints such as pipe burst, water leakage, uncollected garbage, unclean roads, water supply, open manholes, water logging, poor conditions of footpaths”.

The app has already registered over 1000 complaints on average in the last two monsoons. The app is backed by GPS (Global Positioning System), so the location of the pothole will be automatically uploaded and to be rectified within 36 hours.

Android users can download it from play store while the IOS and Windows users can log on to stargrade@thanecity.gov.in.
