At least one person has died as tree fell over his home in Ascension Parish, in the Baton Rouge area.  Ida is testing flood defences strengthened after Hurricane Katrina killed 1, 800 people in 2005, on the 16th anniversary of Katrina a category three storm.

Over 1 million loses power in New Orleans as Hurricane Ida strikes with wind speed in excess of 150mph  ( 240km/h) with catastrophic damage to the power network.

President Joe Biden said Ida would be “life threatening” with immense devastation likely beyond the coasts.

High winds tore part of the roof of a hospital which suffered significant damage, in the town cut off, Louisiana, just inland from the Gulf of Mexico.
